God Don't Like Ugly

Have you ever heard or used this phrase? It's usually said by old, Southern black folks. But what does it really mean? And is it biblical? People will say, "God don't like ugly" when they are referring to someone that has done something that they think is mean, rude, harsh, etc. They are basically saying that God does not like it when your actions are ugly or unfavorable. Therefore, this phrase has nothing to do with looks! In my experience, this has been said to me when I put a boundary in place with someone and they didn't like it. With that being said, were my actions really ugly or did someone just not like that they could no longer benefit from me having a lack of boundaries? This like many other phrases has the ability to be used negatively and to manipulate others. In hindsight, I believe the phrase is meant to encourage people to act in a way that is pleasing to God. When you read your Bible, you will not actually see the phrase, "God Don't Like Ugly." Now that we have technology, a simple search of the word "ugly" in the Bible app will show us all the verses in which this word is used. Most of the verses refer to cows, but none refer to people and how they should behave. If you wanted to use the Bible to support this phrase, then verses such as Matthew 7:1, Luke 6:41, and Matthew 7:2 would be appropriate. These verses center around not judging others and to look at own actions first. In conclusion, it may be true that God doesn't like ugly. But be sure to check yourself first to make sure you aren't being ugly to others and they're just returning the favor. Now, that's tea! #GodDontLikeUgly #tea #BibleVerses
